Hartley and Sons: how we built a Surrey builder a brand worth being proud of

Hartley and Sons had been building in Surrey for over twenty years. Extensions, loft conversions, new builds. A full order book built entirely on word of mouth and repeat clients.

Their website told a different story.

It was slow, hard to navigate on a phone and invisible on Google. Competitors with a fraction of the experience were outranking them for the searches that should have been theirs. The work was exceptional. The online presence was not.

The brief

Build something that matches the quality of the work. Then make sure the right people can find it.

The approach

We started with the brand. The existing logo was functional but carried no character. We rebuilt it around permanence and solid workmanship: a mark that felt like it had been around as long as the business had.

The colour palette came from the materials: dark olive, aged gold, warm cream. The kind of tones that appear when you look at quality brickwork and well-seasoned timber.

The website

The site was built around two goals: credibility and conversion. Every page decision was made with a homeowner in mind: someone who is about to spend a significant amount of money and wants to feel confident before they pick up the phone.

Fast load times. Large, real photography of actual projects. A clear, simple enquiry path. No clutter.

The SEO layer

We built location pages for every town Hartley and Sons operates in, and service pages for each of their core offerings. Google Business Profile optimised. Schema markup in place. A review generation process built into their post-project workflow.

The result

A brand and website that Hartley and Sons are genuinely proud to share. And a digital foundation that will generate enquiries for years without them having to think about it.

This is what Makeproper does. If you run a trades business in Surrey and your online presence does not match the quality of your work, we should talk.
